Injuries & Moves: Gallo reinstated; Lipscomb optioned; García scratched

May 17: 1B/DH Joey Gallo returned from rehab assignment, reinstated from IL; INF Trey Lipscomb optioned to Triple-A
Gallo missed 17 games because of a left shoulder AC sprain. During his 10 rehab games with Single-A Fredericksburg and Triple-A Rochester, Gallo hit four home runs and one double with eight RBIs and 11 walks.
Lipscomb, ranked as the Nationals’ No. 16 prospect, made his second stint with Washington this season. He is hitting .252 with 10 stolen bases and 16 runs in 33 games at the Major League level.
May 17: 2B Luis García Jr. (heel injury) scratched from series opener
García was replaced by Ildemaro Vargas at second base ahead of Friday night’s series opener in Philadelphia after irritating his right heel in the previous series in Chicago. Manager Dave Martinez hoped he would be available to pinch-hit.

The Nationals are encouraged by the progress of Gray’s bullpen sessions. Manager Dave Martinez noted, “If he keeps continuing to go this way, we’re going to ramp him up a little bit.” Gray was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 6. (Last updated: May 17)

LHP Jose A. Ferrer (teres major strain)
Expected return: First half of season
Ferrer, who had been rehabbing with the team to start the season, is continuing his recovery at the Nationals training complex in West Palm Beach, Fla. He is throwing up to 75 feet.
