Mason Miller of the Oakland Athletics named the American League Reliever of the Month for March/April; Ryan Helsley of the St. Louis Cardinals named the National League Reliever of the Month for March/April

Closer Mason Miller of the Oakland Athletics has been voted the American League Reliever of the Month for March/April, and closer Ryan Helsley of the St. Louis Cardinals has been named the NationalLeague Reliever of the Month for March/April. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Miller earned his first career Reliever of the Month Award and became the fourth Athletics reliever to win the award, joing Blake Treinen and Liam Hendriks, who each won twice, and Lou Trivino, who won Oakland’s most recent award in June of 2021. Helsley also claimed his first career Reliever of the Month Award and became just the third Cardinals reliever to take home the honor, along with Jason Isringhausen in May 2006 and Ryan Franklin won in August 2009.

• The 25-year-old posted a 1.35 ERA (2 ER/13.1 IP), converting all eight of his save opportunities across 11 appearances in which he allowed just two runs on seven hits with four walks, 28 strikeouts, a 0.83 WHIP, a .149 opponents average and 18.90 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.
• The Pennsylvania native recorded his first career save on April 9th at Texas, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Overall, the 6’5” righty struck out 28 of the 51 (54.9%) batters he faced in March/April, marking the best strikeout percentage among qualified relievers.
• After allowing two runs in his appearance on March 30th, Miller has gone 13.1 consecutive innings across 11 appearances without allowing a run. Over the stretch he has allowed just four hits and three walks.
• The flamethrower threw three pitches over 103.0 MPH and his 94 pitches over 100.0 MPH were the most in the Majors in March/April. Michael Kopech of the Chicago White Sox was the next closest with 57 pitches of at least 100.0 MPH.
• Opponents are 5-for-27 (.185) against Miller’s four-seam fastball this year and just 2-for-23 (.087) against his slider. Of his 28 strikeouts last month, 16 came via his fastball, marking the second-most among Major League relievers and 12 came via his slider, which were tied for third-most.

• The 29-year-old posted a 1.69 ERA (3 ER/16.0 IP), converting 10 of his 11 save opportunities across 16 appearances in which he allowed five runs on 13 hits with just two walks, 19 strikeouts, a 0.94 WHIP, a .220 opponents average and 10.69 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. His 10 saves and 16 appearances are both tied for the most in the Majors this year.
• The Oklahoma native failed to record a save in his first appearance of the year on March 30th, but took the win as the Cardinals topped the Dodgers in 10 innings. After his only blown save of the year, he went a perfect 10-for-10 in April, marking the first time in his career that he recorded 10 saves within a single month.
• The Northeastern State product became the ninth Cardinals closer to record 10 saves in a single month and the first since his current teammate Giovanny Gallegos recorded 11 saves in September 2021. His 10 saves in April surpassed his previous career-high of seven saves in September 2022.
• Over the first month of the year, opponents went 6-for-31 (.194) with just one extra-base hit, a double by Alec Bohm on April 8th, against Helsley’s slider. His 13 strikeouts via his slider were the second-most on the pitch in all of Baseball behind only Michael Grove of the Dodgers, who recorded 16 strikeouts with his slider in Mach/April.
