May 3rd, 2024

Prior to tonight’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the Phillies placed right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 5/1) with right shoulder inflammation. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, right-handed pitcher José Ruiz had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley. Ruiz will wear No. 66.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Marte, 29, opened the season with six scoreless appearances (6.2 IP) before allowing his first run on April 12. He has posted a 2.70 ERA (4 ER, 13.1 IP) across 12 outings with 12 strikeouts to five walks. Nine of his 12 appearances have been scoreless.

Originally signed by the Kansas City Royals as an amateur free agent on July 19, 2012, Marte was acquired by the Phillies from the Giants on Jan. 8, 2023.

Ruiz, 29, has allowed two runs across 11 innings (1.64 ERA) with three walks against 13 strikeouts in 10 relief appearances for the IronPigs this season, holding opposing hitters to a .179 batting average. His three saves lead the team. Earlier this year, Ruiz attended spring training with the Phillies as a non-roster invitee. The 6-foot-1 righty has appeared in 212 major league games (2 starts) with the San Diego Padres (2017), Chicago White Sox (2018-23) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2023). Ruiz is 5-8 with a 4.51 ERA (110 ER, 219.1 IP) and 217 strikeouts for his career.

The Guacara, Venezuela, native signed with the Phillies as a minor league free agent on Nov. 28, 2023. Ruiz originally signed with the Padres as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2011.
